Art book publisher Taschen’s Prefab Houses takes a look at the history of assembled domiciles around the world, looking at a style of homes originally meant to supply inexpensive yet sturdy housing that grew to be an area where architects and housing experts could explore edgier and ultramodern housing styles.

The book, which comes in English, German, and French in the same volume, covers “industrially prefabricated components, the difficulties of delivery to the building site, and the intricacies of assembly and completion,” according to a Taschen release. Along with homes in the United States, the book covers Asia, Africa, and Europe, where Taschen says prehab homes started in the 1830s, created for British emigrants to Australia.
